Francisco Esaú Cossa, writing as Ungulani Ba Ka Khosa (Tsonga), was born on August 1, 1957, in Inhaminga, located in the Sofala province of Mozambique. With a background in law, history, and geography, he has distinguished himself not only as a writer but also as a newspaper columnist. He is a co-founder of the iconic literary magazine Charrua, which serves as a space for cultural resistance and the affirmation of Mozambican literature.
Recognised as one of the most prominent voices in Portuguese-language African literature, he received the José Craveirinha Prize for Literature in 2007 for his work Os Sobreviventes da Noite (The Survivors of the Night). His debut novel, Ualalapi, published in 1987, is a seminal work of modern African fiction. It won the Grand Prize for Mozambican Narrative Fiction and has been included in the esteemed list of the 100 best African books of the 20th century since 2002.
