An Introduction to the Thought of Mohammed Arkoun: Memories and Conversations
Despite his fame, Arkoun remains relatively little known, owing to the sheer volume of his writings, the confusion surrounding his thought, the misunderstanding of the contexts and intellectual references with which he engaged, and the generalizations resulting from the study of certain aspects of his thought to the exclusion of others. I hope that one day a comprehensive and synthetic study will be undertaken, one capable of encompassing Arkoun’s intellectual system in its various dimensions and throughout all its stages. Yet I am aware that such a study would be difficult to formulate and painstaking to carry out.
In the meantime, we can provide methodological approaches to reading and understanding Arkoun, provided that these approaches remain attentive to the various issues I have mentioned, so as to prevent the reader from falling into misleading projections and erroneous interpretations.
One of the greatest pitfalls, in my view, is to read Arkoun from a narrowly Arab perspective, whereas his thought aspires to universality. This introduction seeks to clarify the concepts and explain the aims that Arkoun sought to achieve. I do not claim to present his thought exactly as it is, for every reading is necessarily an interpretation. I do, however, emphasize that the absence of certain contextual elements from the reader’s understanding may lead them to interpret Arkoun’s texts in a direction entirely different from what their author intended…
