Combien de cœurs retrace l’histoire d’une jeune Égyptienne qui se heurte aux traditions et à sa famille lorsqu’elle choisit de faire carrière dans la médecine. Refusant de se soumettre à un mari et à tout ce que la société attend d’une femme, elle se coupe les cheveux et travaille avec acharnement dans un dispensaire. Les soins prodigués aux corps et aux âmes de ses patient·es l’amènent à construire les fondements d’une pensée rebelle et libre.
Publié en 1957 dans la presse égyptienne sous le titre Mémoires d’une femme docteure, ce premier roman inaugure les convictions qui traversent tous les livres de Nawal El Saadawi, alors âgée de vingt-six ans. Il est considéré comme une œuvre pionnière dans le féminisme arabe moderne.
Psychiatre de formation, militante emprisonnée, contrainte à l’exil, écrivaine prolifique censurée, Nawal El Saadawi est une figure égyptienne majeure de l’émancipation des femmes du monde arabe.
How Many Hearts tells the story of a young Egyptian woman who clashes with tradition and her family when she chooses to pursue a career in medicine. Refusing to submit to a husband and all that society expects of a woman, she cuts her hair and works hard in a dispensary. The care she lavished on the bodies and souls of her patients led her to build the foundations of a rebellious and free thought.
Published in 1957 in the Egyptian press under the title Memoir of a Woman Doctor, this first novel inaugurates the convictions that run through all Nawal El Saadawi's books, at the age of twenty-six. It is considered a pioneering work of modern Arab feminism.
Trained as a psychiatrist, imprisoned and exiled as an activist, censored as a prolific writer, Nawal El Saadawi is a major Egyptian figure in the emancipation of women in the Arab world.
