10 juillet 1971, Ahmed Marzouki reçoit l’ordre de tirer sur tout ce qui bouge. Il se retrouve ainsi impliqué, à son insu, dans une tentative de coup d’État contre Hassan II, roi du Maroc.
À la fois acteur et victime de l’Histoire, il connaîtra la violence des interrogatoires puis l’enfer de Tazmamart, un bagne secret en plein désert où il passera dix-huit ans dans l’isolement le plus total, comme effacé de la mémoire du monde.
Dans l’ombre de sa cellule étroite aux allures de tombe, où le temps s’étire à l’infini, il fait la rencontre de Faraj, un petit oiseau blessé qui ne peut plus voler. Avec lui renaît l’espoir, et l’horreur du quotidien est soudain balayée par le vent de la liberté à venir.

On July 10, 1971, Ahmed Marzouki receives an order to shoot at anything that moves. Unbeknownst to him, he becomes involved in an attempted coup d’état against King Hassan II of Morocco.
Both a participant in and a victim of history, he endures brutal interrogations before being sent to the hell of Tazmamart, a secret desert prison where he spends eighteen years in complete isolation, as though erased from the memory of the world.
In the darkness of his narrow cell, resembling a tomb, where time seems to stretch endlessly, he encounters Faraj, a small injured bird that can no longer fly. Through this unlikely companion, hope is reborn, and the horrors of daily life are suddenly swept away by the promise of freedom carried on the wind.
This book was published in co-edition with Alifbata Publishing House in France.
Based on the testimony of Ahmed Marzouki, one of the few survivors of the prison camp infamously known as the Moroccan Alcatraz, and author of Tazmamart, Cell 10.
