Este libro recorre las lecturas, resignificaciones y reescrituras de La Araucana desde el siglo XVI hasta la actualidad, principalmente en Chile y también en España y Europa. Analiza cómo este poema épico renacentista se transformó en un símbolo identitario y cultural para una nación inexistente al momento de su publicación. La obra examina el proceso de “chilenización” del poema y demuestra cómo cada época relee el texto desde nuevos contextos históricos, culturales e interpretativos. Así, La Araucana se confirma como un clásico vivo, capaz de adquirir nuevos significados a través del tiempo y de las transformaciones de la sociedad.
Bernardo Subercaseaux (1942) es académico y ensayista chileno, profesor titular ad honorem de la Universidad de Chile. Autor de numerosas obras sobre cultura, historia e identidad latinoamericana.
This book explores the readings, reinterpretations, and rewritings of La Araucana from the 16th century to the present, mainly in Chile as well as in Spain and Europe. It examines how this Renaissance epic poem became an identity and cultural symbol for a nation that did not yet exist when it was first published. The work analyzes the “Chileanization” of the poem and shows how each historical period rereads the text through new cultural and interpretative contexts. In this way, La Araucana is revealed as a living classic, continually acquiring new meanings through time and social change.
Bernardo Subercaseaux (1942) is a Chilean scholar and essayist, honorary full professor at the University of Chile. He is the author of numerous works on culture, history, and Latin American identity.
