Es una obra mayor e inédita en su tipo. En ella su autor analiza en profundidad la dimensión cultural de nuestra historia, entendida como la productividad simbólica de los individuos que la viven y la manera cómo esta se plasma en los discursos de los y las intelectuales de la región.
Este primer volumen abarca desde 1870 a 1920, décadas en las que el desarrollo del quehacer económico, social y cultural permite articular lo que puede ser denominado como «moderno» en la región. Consolidación que se hizo en los términos de una modernidad «neocolonial» y «oligárquica», ello en base a un repertorio ideológico determinista en su mayor parte y, con frecuencia, racialista o desembozadamente racista.

It is a major and unpublished work of its kind. In it, the author analyzes in depth the cultural dimension of our history, understood as the symbolic productivity of the individuals who live it and the way in which this is expressed in the discourses of the intellectuals of the region.
This first volume covers the period from 1870 to 1920, decades in which the development of economic, social and cultural activities allowed the articulation of what can be called "modern" in the region. This consolidation was made in terms of a "neocolonial" and "oligarchic" modernity, based on an ideological repertoire that was for the most part deterministic and, frequently, racialist or blatantly racist.
