The great conservative shift that began in the 1980s gave rise to two ideological systems that might be described as forms of fundamentalism. On the one hand, the advocates of the globalised market seek to bring all human activities within its sphere. On the other, new religious and identity- based hegemonies are attempting to gain a foothold in disoriented societies. Is there a place today for a new universal vision capable of overcoming this double impasse?
