Il est des œuvres d’art qui voyagent. Dans un monde globalisé et marchand, dans une société où le spectacle est roi, cela paraît inéluctable. Et puis, il y a de très rares cas où l’opposition locale au départ d’une œuvre réussit. Ce livre décrit l’un de ces rares cas, celui d’une grande œuvre d’art, La Madonna del Parto, réalisée par Piero della Francesca (vers 1415-1492). Les femmes du village de Monterchi près d'Arezzo en Toscane, où est conservée l'image de la Vierge, se sont d’abord opposées au pouvoir religieux, qui voyait d’un mauvais œil leur dévotion envers cette fresque, et ont ensuite résisté du mieux qu’elles ont pu au pouvoir politique et culturel qui voulait transformer l'œuvre en simple objet muséal.

There are works of art that travel. In a globalized, commercialized world—in a society where spectacle reigns supreme—this seems inevitable. And then there are very rare cases where local opposition to the removal of a work succeeds. This book describes one of these rare cases: that of a great work of art, La Madonna del Parto, created by Piero della Francesca (c. 1415–1492) . The women of the village of Monterchi near Arezzo in Tuscany, where the image of the Virgin is preserved, first opposed the religious authorities, who viewed their devotion to this fresco with disapproval, and then resisted as best they could the political and cultural powers that sought to transform the work into a mere museum piece.
