The Secular Caliphate: Ali Abderraziq and His Critics

The Secular Caliphate: Ali Abdel Raziq and His Censors (The Secular Caliphate: Ali Abdel Raziq and His Censors (350 pp.) is a study of the storm of controversy that erupted in Egypt following the publication of theologian and Islamic judge Ali Abdel Raziq’s landmark book Al-Islam wa Usul al-Hukm (Islam and the Foundations of Political Authority, Cairo, 1925). The study examines the complex relationship between religion and politics and explores the possibility of their separation within Islam.
In this groundbreaking work, Sheikh Ali Abdel Raziq sought to warn Arabs and Muslims that the caliphate, which had governed them since the death of the Prophet and had long been regarded as a religious institution, was in fact nothing more than a political and secular form of authority, like all other systems of government throughout history.
Upon its publication, the book provoked an unprecedented public outcry. It sparked intense debates in the press, triggered a political crisis that contributed to the fall of a government and the calling of new elections, and stirred widespread controversy across Egyptian society. At the same time, Al-Azhar, the renowned Islamic university, reacted forcefully. Ali Abdel Raziq was severely condemned, stripped of his religious status, and deprived of all his official rights.
