Their Amputated Greatness
Dans une ville qui se désosse et se démembre, une Mère Courage et ses deux enfants guettent les appartements vides pour y aménager un semblant de normalité. Le logement de Jean Tabard, récemment incinéré dans le trou incandescent, leur offre sécurité et provisions. Mais il lui manque un réfrigérateur. La mère part ainsi en quête de cet ustensile essentiel, dernier symbole de la fée électrique et d’une société de progrès. Au loin, la barre des immeubles forme un horizon indépassable, un huis clos délimitant l’exploration d’une ville sombre, poisseuse et fatiguée.
Née en 1976 à Lausanne, Marie-Jeanne Urech étudie les sciences sociales à l’Université de Lausanne, puis obtient un diplôme de réalisatrice à la London Film School. Elle reçoit le prix Eugène-Rambert en 2013 avec Les Valets de nuit, paru aux éditions de l’Aire. Chez Hélice Hélas, elle a publié les romans Malax en 2017, La terre tremblante en 2018 et K comme Almanach en 2022.
In a city falling apart and dismembering itself, a Mother Courage and her two children are scouting for empty apartments to create a semblance of normality. Jean Tabard's home, recently incinerated in the burning pit, offers them security and supplies. But it lacks a refrigerator. So the mother sets out in search of this essential utensil, the last symbol of the electric fairy and of Progress. In the distance, the tower block forms an insurmountable horizon, a closed-door space delimiting the exploration of a dark, sticky, and tired city.
Born in 1976 in Lausanne, Marie-Jeanne Urech studied social sciences at the University of Lausanne, then earned a diploma in directing from the London Film School. She received the Eugène Rambert Prize in 2013 for Les Valets de nuit, published by Éditions de l’Aire. With Hélice Hélas, she published the novels Malax in 2017, La Terre tremblante in 2018, and K comme Almanach in 2022.
