Shortly after a stay in the hospital, Flavia, now in her fifties, decides to unearth “the Queen’s treasure”: the collection of letters and objects her mother brought back from South Africa, the country where her parents spent their first year of marriage before returning permanently to Italy. This exploration leads her to discover this intimate legacy, which had been kept silent for many years: her “Wonderful South Africa.” With tenderness and insight, Flavia Ganzenua offers us the perspective of a poet: an evocation of our personal and collective struggle to come to terms with the legacy of the 20th century. And in doing so, she opens up the possibility of a different path.
