Lorsque Sylvanus Olympio prononce ces mots, il ne se doute pas qu’il sera assassiné trois ans plus tard. Sa mort plonge son jeune pays indépendant dans un silence vertigineux.
Nitou Olympio, son neveu, tente de recomposer les fragments d’une vie interrompue. À travers des archives et les souvenirs recueillis de Dinah, la veuve du Président, il retrace le parcours de Sylvanus Olympio de son enfance à son ascension, puis sa chute. Peu à peu, se dessine le double portrait d’un homme et d’une nation.
Ce nouvel opus de Kangni Alem revisite la période des indépendances africaines, en mêlant l’intime et le politique.
Kangni ALEM est romancier, dramaturge et universitaire. Lauréat des Prix Tchicaya U’Tamsi et le Grand Prix Littéraire d’Afrique Noire, il enseigne le théâtre et la littérature comparée à l’Université de Lomé.

Nitou Olympio, his nephew, attempts to piece together the fragments of a life cut short. Through archives and memories gathered from Dinah, the President’s widow, he traces Sylvanus Olympio’s journey from his childhood to his rise, and then his fall. Little by little, a dual portrait of a man and a nation emerges.
This new work by Kangni Alem revisits the era of African independence, blending the personal and the political.
Kangni ALEM is a novelist, playwright, and academic. Winner of the Tchicaya U’Tamsi Prize and the Grand Prix Littéraire d’Afrique Noire, he teaches theater and comparative literature at the University of Lomé.
