Émeric Bergeaud est né aux Cayes dans le sud d’Haïti en 1818. Ses études secondaires terminées, il devient, à cause de sa solide formation, le secrétaire de son oncle, J. M. Borgella, l’un des généraux ayant dirigé l’arrondissement des Cayes. Auteur du premier roman sur le mythe fondateur de la nation haïtienne, Stella, paru à titre posthume en 1859, il meurt le 23 février 1858 à l’île de Saint-Thomas à l’âge de 40 ans.
Stella evokes in detail, in a progression which takes place in advances and returns, the entire framework of the thirteen years of the Haitian War of Independence (1791-1804) during which the "natives" - not the Taïnos, but those that Europeans had brought from Africa – opposed the French colonizing forces. This is the story of the activists of the revolution that will found Haiti, this demand for the fundamental freedom of every human being which far exceeds the ambitions of other revolutions of the time. Émeric Bergeaud was born in Les Cayes in the south of Haiti in 1818. After finishing secondary school, he became, because of his solid training, the secretary of his uncle, J. M. Borgella, one of the generals who led the district of Cayes. He is the author of the first novel on the founding myth of the Haitian nation, Stella, published posthumously in 1859. He died on February 23, 1858, on the island of Saint-Thomas at the age of 40.
