Terra Forma. A Book of Speculative Maps
Cinq siècles après les voyageurs de la Renaissance partis cartographier les terra incognita du Nouveau Monde, Terra Forma propose de redécouvrir autrement cette terre inconnue : la nôtre. En redéfinissant, ou plutôt en étendant le vocabulaire cartographique traditionnel, il offre un manifeste pour la fondation d’un nouvel imaginaire géographique et politique.
En sept chapitres, ce livre esquisse de nouvelles façons d’appréhender le monde : par les profondeurs, par les mouvements, par le point de vie, par les périphéries, par le pouls, par les creux, par les disparitions et les ruines. Écrit sur le mode du récit d’exploration, Terra Forma produit des savoirs situés et incarnés.
Frédérique Aït-Touati est historienne des sciences et metteuse en scène. Elle est chargée de recherche au CNRS où elle explore les liens entre sciences, littérature et politique.
Alexandra Arènes est architecte diplômée de l’ENSA de Grenoble. Ses recherches portent sur les théories et pratiques de cartographies alternatives sur des territoires confrontés à la crise climatique.
Axelle Grégoire est architecte, diplômée de l’ENSA de Versailles . Elle travaille actuellement sur des projets de recherche expérimentaux, entre pièces artistiques et prises de position sur la ville.
This book charts the exploration of an unknown world: our own. Just as Renaissance travelers set out to map the terra incognito of the New World, the mapmakers of Terra Forma have set out to rediscover the world that we think we know. They do this with a new kind of cartography that maps living things rather than space emptied of life and available to be conquered or colonized. The maps in Terra Forma lead us inward, not off into the distance, moving from the horizon line of conventional cartography to the thickness of the ground, from the global to the local.
Each map in Terra Forma is based on a specific territory or territories, and each tool, or model, creates a new focal point through which the territory is redrawn.
Frédérique Aït-Touati is a science historian and theater director. She is a research fellow at the CNRS, where she explores the connections between science, literature, and politics.
Alexandra Arènes is an architect and a graduate of ENSA Grenoble. Her research focuses on the theories and practices of alternative cartography in regions facing the climate crisis.
Axelle Grégoire is an architect and a graduate of ENSA Versailles. She is currently working on experimental research projects that blend artistic installations with statements on the city.
