تبدو رحلة العرب إلى أوروبا، في المخيال العام، محصورة في اسم رفاعة الطهطاوي، بينما غابت عن الذاكرة الثقافية أسماء رحّالة ومثقفين آخرين سجّلوا مشاهداتهم في نصوص ثرية. يستعيد هذا الكتاب أصوات أحمد زكي باشا، وأمين فكري، وحسن توفيق العدل وغيرهم، كاشفًا ما حملته كتاباتهم من وصف للمدن الأوروبية، وتأمل للعادات، ورصد للحياة الثقافية، وانبهار بمنجزات الحداثة. كما يبرز هذه الرحلات بوصفها نواةً لخطاب «استغرابي» مبكر، ينظر إلى الغرب موضوعًا للمعرفة والمقارنة، ويعيد الاعتبار إلى جيل من الرحالة الذين كتبوا عن أوروبا، وعن أسئلة النهضة العربية في آن واحد.

In the Arab imagination, journeys to Europe are often reduced to the legacy of Rifa'a al-Tahtawi, overshadowing a generation of travelers and intellectuals whose accounts have largely been forgotten. This book revives the voices of Ahmad Zaki Pasha, Amin Fikri, Hassan Tawfiq al-Adl, and others, revealing their rich observations of European cities, social customs, cultural life, and modernity. It also reexamines these journeys as an early form of Occidentalism: an Arab intellectual engagement with the West based on curiosity, comparison, and knowledge rather than domination, offering fresh insight into the Arab Nahda and its aspirations.
Randa Sabry is Professor of Literary Criticism at Cairo University. She holds a Doctorat d'État from Paris and has published studies in French. Since 2000, she has led a research project rediscovering and translating Arab travel accounts of Europe.
