Drawing on the lawsuits that OvaHerero and Nama descendants have filed against Germany since 1999, this essay looks at the country’s handling of its colonial history.
Also in focus is the structural constitution of modern-day international law, which anti-racist activists are increasingly subjecting to post-colonial legal critique. Yet again, Germany is demonstrating its propensity to dismiss the demands of the descendants of murder victims—while simultaneously performing the role of the international community’s great 'Wiedergutmacher' once more.
