La primera edición de Elegía Apu Inka Atawallpaman: Primer documento de la Resistencia Inka (siglo XVI), del poeta y estudioso Odi Gonzales salió de la imprenta hace una década, en el año 2014. El prólogo de Mercedes López-Baralt declaraba, con justicia y exactitud, que el libro de Gonzales era tan esperado como necesario. Agotada esa edición inicial, la segunda genera la misma expectativa y reafirma una certeza: la anónima elegía quechua, la virtuosa versión en castellano que de ella ofrece Odi Gonzales, los capítulos de riguroso análisis del poema y su contexto, así como la inclusión de traducciones anteriores — notablemente, la de José María Arguedas —, hacen de libro una obra indispensable.
Odi Gonzales es poeta, traductor, estudioso de la tradición oral quechua (siglos XVI/XXI) y profesor universitario en Perú y Estados Unidos. Ha publicado 8 libros de poesía, 4 libros de ensayo e investigación y un diccionario trilingüe (Quechua, Español, Inglés). Desde el año 2008 es profesor de Lengua y Cultura Quechua, Antropología Lingüística Andina, e Introduction to the Andean Studies en New York University.
The first edition of Elegía Apu Inka Atawallpaman: First Document of the Inka Resistance (16th Century), by the poet and scholar Odi Gonzales, came off the press a decade ago, in 2014. The prologue by Mercedes López-Baralt declared, with justice and accuracy, that Gonzales' book was as expected as it was necessary. Once that initial edition has been sold out, the second generates the same expectation and reaffirms a certainty: the anonymous Quechua elegy, the virtuous version in Spanish that Odi Gonzales offers, chapters of rigorous analysis of the poem and its context, as well as the inclusion of translations from previous ones —
notably, that of José María Arguedas — make the book an indispensable work.
Odi Gonzales is a poet, translator, scholar of Quechua oral tradition (16th/21st centuries) and a university teacher in Peru and the United States. He has published 8 books of poetry, 4 books of essays and research and a trilingual dictionary (Quechua, Spanish, English). Since 2008 he has been a professor of Quechua Language and Culture, Andean Linguistic Anthropology, and Introduction to the Andean Studies at New York
University.
