Many emigrated—some crossing the river into Iraq, others riding the sea to the southern shores of the Gulf to settle in places like Dubai, Qatar, or Kuwait, though subsequent generations still bear the pain of forced displacement. As for those who remained, some continue to resist through demonstrations to thesee day, facing Iranian repression even after a century occupations.
The family of Aziz and Ruqayya tried to protect her children, grandchildren, and a fourth generation—some of whom have forgotten the story of AL-Ahvaz, while others remain committed to preserve their identity and advocate for freedom to return to their homeland.
This is a multi-generational saga covering more than a century and a half, before and after the occupation while the refugees splits across various locations in neighboring country, from Mohammerah and other parts of AL-Ahvaz to Sharjah, Doha, Baghdad, Basra, Aleppo, and Damascus, as well as London—where some Ahvazis, including the sons of Sheikh Khazaal, eventually settled , However, Sheikh Khazaal’s old seal remains with the family hidden in book to remind generations of what happened in 1925.
In this novel, women recount numerous stories—both sorrowful and joyful—and describes the customs and traditions of Ahvaz, including the songs, poetry, and traditional dishes that are still prepared in local homes. The novel devotes a significant portion of its narrative to these elements, allowing the readers to discover this cultural identity through the voices of both men and women, all characters and events—whether real or fictional—are anchored in a specific timeline, ensuring the narrative’s chronology is clear and consistent with historical facts.
In this novel, the author intertwines with a lot of information to verified historical events with the fictional narrative of the Aziz family, drawing clear picture of the people and their time
She employed a polyphonic narrative technique, so each chapter was told from the perspective of a specific character; a character might recount an event from their own unique angle or reveal details unknown to other voice. Consequently, the chapters function like puzzle pieces that fit together to form a complete picture—culminating in the fourteenth chapter, which consists of a single sentence and leaving the readers to imagine what might happened in the future.
