L’arme invisible de la françafrique

The Invisible Weapon of Françafrique

Since the creation of the CFA franc in 1945 as the currency of the French Colonies in Africa, the acronym has evolved and now refers to two distinct currencies: the West African CFA franc, issued by the African Financial Community, and the Central African CFA franc, issued by the Financial Cooperation in Central Africa. Yet Paris still determines the external value of both currencies. The franc zone, which once served as an instrument of economic control over the French colonies, continues to provide the French economy with a comparative advantage across the African continent.
