Reuse Is As Simple As Building. Reusing Materials For Sustainable Architecture
Aujourd’hui, les acteurs de la construction doivent faire face à une équation insoluble. Car réaménager des locaux existants reste la variante la plus écologique mais souvent la plus difficile à choisir dans la mesure où, comme c’est le cas en Suisse, le secteur de la construction a un poids majeur dans l’économie en termes d’emplois et d’investissements. Or il s’agit d’une industrie dévastatrice pour notre planète. Il devient donc urgent de valoriser les bâtiments existants et de mettre le réemploi des matériaux au centre des pratiques. Dans un avenir idéal, on ne construira plus de nouveaux bâtiments on mettra l’accent sur la rénovation et la maintenance de l’existant.
Architecte de formation, Raphaël Bach est codirecteur de l’association Matériuum qui forme et innove en faveur du réemploi dans la construction. Il enseigne également l’architecture à l’EPFL ; il vit et travaille à Lausanne.
Today's construction industry has to face an insoluble equation. Redeveloping existing premises remains the most environmentally-friendly option, but is often the most difficult to choose because, as is the case in Switzerland, the construction sector is a major contributor to the economy in terms of employment and investment. Yet it is an industry that is devastating our planet. It is therefore becoming urgent to enhance the value of existing buildings and put the re-use of materials at the heart of our practices. In an ideal future, we will no longer be constructing new buildings, but rather focusing on the renovation and maintenance of existing ones.
Trained as an architect, Raphaël Bach is co-director of the Matériuum association, which trains and innovates in favor of reuse in construction. He also teaches architecture at EPFL, and lives and works in Lausanne.
