Madagascar sous la 1ère République de 1960 à 1972

Madagascar under the First Republic from 1960 to 1972

What is the legacy of the First Malagasy Republic (1960–1972)? Some argue that it was a period of "neocolonialism"—colonization in a different or disguised form. In other words, "Tsiranana was a puppet of France, and the PSD was an antechamber to the French Socialist Party." This view implies a need to completely break away from any form of colonization and demand genuine "Malagasization." Others maintain that it was "the era of Madagascar’s economic takeoff," "a time when Madagascar was known as the 'Happy Island'," and a period when "living standards were higher than today" and "basic necessities were plentiful in the markets"—summed up by the phrase hafa ihany ny tamin’ny andron’i Tsiranana e! (literally: "Wow, the Tsiranana era was truly unforgettable!"). Faced with these conflicting views, several questions arise. In this manual, we attempt to provide some answers, though we note that this is merely a contribution to the history of our beloved homeland.
