M.A. Kelly
The Limbo Circus and other stories
Carefully observed stories set across southern Africa where ordinary lives collide with unexpected situations. At a township's edge, child performers develop impossible abilities. In rural Namibia, a security guard protects an abandoned fish farm while harbouring wartime secrets. A zoologist's search for a new species in Zambia masks personal turmoil. A conversation on a flight to Addis Ababa becomes a turning point for a young woman caught between cultures. From a near-fatal swim off Mozambique to corrupt choices during the pandemic, each story exposes human nature's beauty and darkness. The collection’s dark humour captures the region's social landscape, engaging with issues such as the need for acceptance, the weight of secrets, and unexpected resilience.
M.A. Kelly lives in Namibia and works in the non-profit sector. Originally from Manchester, she worked at London Zoo before moving to southern Africa. A Bed on Bricks, her first collection came out in 2022.
